The engine behind the jet

The Kaveri Engine is a jet engine made for fighter aircraft. It was designed to power Indian warplanes, especially the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), which is one of India’s own fighter jets.

The engine was developed by a group called GTRE, which stands for Gas Turbine Research Establishment. GTRE is part of DRDO, the Defence Research and Development Organisation of India. These are the scientists and engineers who work on keeping the country safe with high-tech inventions.

What does a jet engine do?

A jet engine is like the heart of an aeroplane. It sucks in air, heats it, and then pushes it out the back at a very high speed. This creates a force called thrust, which makes the plane move forward at high speed.

The Kaveri Engine is a turbofan engine, which means it utilises a large fan at the front to push a significant amount of air while also consuming fuel to increase its temperature and speed.

Why is the Kaveri Engine special?

The Kaveri Engine is special because it’s made in India.

In the past, India had to buy engines from other countries. But having our own engine means:

A short history

Over the years, the Kaveri engine has undergone numerous tests. It was even tested in Russia on a specially modified aircraft to assess its performance in the sky.

Although it faced some challenges, the engine has improved significantly over time and has taught Indian scientists a great deal about jet engine design.

Was it used in fighter jets?

The Kaveri Engine was first meant for the Tejas fighter jet, but it wasn’t ready in time. So, Tejas started flying with another engine — the GE engine from the USA.

But the Kaveri project didn’t stop. Now, it’s being improved and may be used in:

  • Drones
  • Trainer aircraft
  • Future fighter jets

It’s like a student learning and getting better with practice!

What did we learn?

Even though the Kaveri Engine hasn’t powered fighter jets yet, it has given Indian scientists:

What’s next?

India is now working on future aircraft projects like:

  • AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft)

A more advanced version of the Kaveri Engine could be used in these aircraft. It’s also part of India’s mission to be self-reliant — we refer to this as Atmanirbhar Bharat.

  • It can produce around 52 kilonewtons of thrust — that’s like pushing a small bus!
  • It has been tested for over 1,800 hours
